Some traditions of the Chinese New Year.
1. The Chinese believe that as they meet a new year, they should put behind them the things of the past. They clean their house, pay off debts, buy new clothes, paint the doors and window frames and even get new haircuts.
2. Red is the traditional colour of the New Year. It frightens away evil spirits and brings good luck. So many people decorate their houses with the red lanterns. They often wear red clothes as well. At midnight fireworks and firecrackers scare away evil spirits.
3. On New Year’s Eve families gather for a holiday meal. But they never eat meat, that’s traditional. It’s also bad luck to use knifes, scissors or other sharp things at New Year’s dinner.
4. Children wake up early on New Year’s Day. They usually find small red envelopes with sweets or money under their pillows.
5. You have to be happy and polite for 15 days after New Year’s Day!
