Early in 1830 the Bessemer family went to live in London. Here Henry decided to become an inventor. He tried to cast ornaments in brass. Then he began designing a new type setting machine. It was a clever invention: an experienced printer could set 6,000 letters an hour where as by the old hand method a skilled man could set only about 1,700 letters an hour from sugar-canes, a steam-fan; he also invented a method of continuous braking for trains and introduced the use of luggage-vans.
Bessemer made many new inventions: he worked out a new system of stamping, designed a new press for extracting the juice.
